Vic Braden, in his classic book "Mental Tennis",
gives a great lesson in how to improve at tennis
that applies equally well to communication
skills. Here's what he writes:
When it comes to improvement, most players start
thinking in terms of thousands of changes, and
of course the whole idea becomes overwhelming.
But in fact, frequently all you have to do is
solve one or two problems and you become a whole
new tennis player. Think about that: If you
straighten out one single stroke, your can
improve your game enormously.
The same is true with communication skills.
You can dramatically improve the quality of your
presentations by improving just one or two parts
of your overall communications "game." To
find out where you need to improve, attend
Speechworks Persuasive Speaker I Workshop. In
this workshop, you’ll deliver five presentations
in front of a small group all with the help of
our expert coaches.
The workshop focuses on two areas:
-
How to organize a message that is simple and
focuses on audience needs. Speechworks teaches
a simple Formula for focusing on listener
needs. We believe that if you have strong
content, you will be more confident when you
get up to speak.
-
How to deliver the message in a style that
connects with the listeners. We focus on eye
contact, gestures, voice energy, and facial
energy. Our coaches will give you private
feedback on where you most need to improve.
All participants receive five private sessions
with a coach to rehearse and review the
videotapes of their presentations. Open
workshops are held twice a month at the
Speechworks training center in Atlanta.
