Banish The "Ums", "Likes" and "You Knows." How to Eliminate "Filler" Words.

Are you an F-Wad? Filler word addict?

Many of our clients are hooked on words like "Like," "You know." "Uh," "Umm," and "Well."  Filler words can eat away at a confident appearance like a virus.  For most F-Wad's, the core problem is fear of silence.  Just the thought of a few seconds passing by without hearing your voice is horrifying.

But many of our clients have dropped their F-Wad status with three simple steps and a little determination.

1.        Focus on the problem Resolve to be conscious of the problem for a few weeks.  Three should be enough for any serious F-wad.

2.        Notice the words.  Sensitize your brain to know when you are using filler words. People that use filler words don't even hear them coming out of their mouths.  Simply resolve to hear yourself using the words.  Just putting the thought in your head is usually enough.   You’ll start to hear them all the time.

3.        Pause instead of saying “um.” Once you’re aware that you’re using the words, work on closing your lips whenever you sense that the words are about to come out.

Before long, whenever you get to the point in the conversation where you can’t think of what you’re going to say next, you’ll consciously keep your mouth shut and remain silent while you think of what to say next.

At first it will seem awkward.  That silence will be intimidating.  But gradually, you’ll become comfortable with the silence and realize that allowing a pause in the conversation shows confidence.

F-Wads of the world pause. You have nothing to lose but your "uhs."
