Poor Howard Dean!  Sure, His Voice was Shrill.  But Finger Pointing was an Angry Gesture.

At the risk of appearing to pile on Candidate Howard Dean, the infamous “shriek heard around the world” was probably not very presidential.  But neither were his gestures.

When watching what has to be most overplayed campaign speech in history, most people focus on Dean’s over-the-top (supporters say “motivational”) voice.  But someone needs to point out those angry gestures.  Specifically, the pointing fingers.

To See the "Softer Side of Sears", Avoid Jargon or PowerPoint with This Retail Exec.

If there’s any doubt that the business world today is seeking simpler, plainspoken presentations, you need look no further than Sears executive Bill Bass.  Bass’s rampages against Sears’ PowerPoint and Jargon were graphically documented in a recent article in the Wall Street Journal.

Bass, who took over the Sears internet business after the retail giant acquired his old company Lands’ End, has been a vocal critic of Sears’ formalized and somewhat jargon-filled presentation style.

"All Communication is Motivation", says Peter Drucker.  We Couldn't Agree More.

Business Guru Peter Drucker said “Communication  . . .  always makes demands.  It always demands that the recipient become somebody, do something, believe something. It always appeals to motivation.”

To motivate people effectively, you need to have a focused message that you deliver with passion.  That’s what we teach at Speechworks.

Why Do We Get Nervous When We Speak?  Maybe Public Speaking is an Unnatural Act.

Public speaking is the number one fear of the average person.  It’s a statistic that’s repeated constantly.  But the question remains: “Why?”

There are plenty of psychologists that will give you a theory.  But here’s another thought.  Could it be that we fear public speaking because it is an unnatural act for the human species?   Put another way, if you look at the evidence, humans were not designed to stand in front of large groups and speak. As a result, most of us feel uncomfortable doing it.

When Henry Ford introduced the Model T, the joke was that you could have your car any color you wanted “Just so long as you want black.”   Unfortunately, most public speaking training is the same way.

Most public speaking training takes place in workshops.  But Speechworks is changing that model with Communication Situation Coaching.
