If the mob
boss thing doesn’t work out for Tony Soprano, he might just
make it as a communication skills coach. Certainly, we at
Speechworks can’t dispute his basic communication philosophy:
Know what you want to say. Know your audience. And keep it
tight.
That’s just
one bit of management wisdom as described in “Tony Soprano on
Management”, a hot new book by New York management consultant
and former Atlanta resident Anthony Schneider.
“Good
communication means understanding the audience, choosing the
right means of communication and simplifying the message,”
Schneider writes in one chapter entitled “Behind the Bada
Bing: Making Decisions.” The book is available in bookstores,
at Amazon and at
www.tonysopranoonmanagement.com.
Schneider’s
main theme is that Soprano may not be an MBA. But he’s
actually a very effective manager that can teach us
“civilians” a thing or two. Among the Soprano rules that
encapsulate his approach:
-
“You can’t
just whack ‘em.”
-
“Create
and save time.”
-
“Know
Yourself.”
-
“It’s okay
to squeeze.”
-
“Be
direct.”
-
“Make it
personal.”
-
“Innovate
now.”
If Tony were to attend Speechworks we might also suggest that
he always keep his messages to three points and use more
stories to bring his messages to life. Of course, we’d make
these suggestions with all due respect.
At
Speechworks we help our clients learn how to give
