If its
friends you’re looking for, eye contact coupled with a smile
is a pretty irresistible start. Wal-Mart Founder Sam Walton
understood the extraordinary power of this one-two punch.
In his
autobiography, Walton tells about how he came to be elected
to several student government offices at the University of
Missouri, even though he was from Arkansas and knew few
people on campus.
His
campaign strategy was as follows. When walking across
campus, every time he would see someone (anyone) coming down
the path towards him, he'd make eye contact, and
smile. Then, he’d say something nice like “hello."
The
result? His fellow students elected him to several
offices.
That's the
power of eye contact coupled with a smile. At
Speechworks, we call it the "Old One-Two". Something about eye contact and a
smile builds relationships.
