Kerry Edges Bush in Speechworks Poll With 54% of Vote to Bush's 46%.

 

Democratic Presidential hopeful John Kerry is a better speaker than President George Bush according to a narrow majority of respondents to a poll taken over the last month at the Speechworks website.

Out of 77 votes cast, 42 picked Kerry as the better speaker with 35 picking Bush.  Some of the votes appeared to be based on partisanship rather than an objective assessment of the candidates’ speaking skills.  However, some voters gave well-considered reasons for their choice.

 

Doctor-Patient Research Provides Insight Into Effective Business Communication.

And you thought your colleague across the hallway was a poor listener.  Consider this. When the doctor asks you “Where does it hurt?” you have less than 18 seconds to respond before being interrupted.

That’s just one conclusion from a burgeoning field of research into how doctors and patients communicate, according to a recent article in the New York Times.

Speechworks has formed The Asher Company, a selling and communication skills coaching firm for lawyers.  The company’s mission is to help lawyers learn the selling and communication skills that win and keep clients.

“Speechworks has been working with lawyers for more than 15 years, helping them win business and communicate more effectively,” said Joey Asher, President of the company and a former practicing lawyer. “We have developed a large practice with lawyers and we wanted them to know that we have special programs to help them.”

A study by a British consulting firm found that 20 percent of people who use jargon or buzzwords, use them wrong. With that in mind, think about how badly your credibility will be undercut if your audience members think you’re using a piece of jargon incorrectly.
