Whenever people ask us how they can be more
effective speaking “off the cuff”, we remind
them of those roadway bridges with the posted weight limits.
Indeed, every year small bridges collapse when
truckers try to drive their 20-ton rigs over
bridges with posted 10-ton limits.
What does this have to do with communication?
We think that communication is like a bridge with a
posted weight limit. Spoken communication works
best when it’s kept simple and free of too much
“weight” like complicated statistics and
detailed logical explanations.
Indeed,
the best “off the cuff” communicators focus on
the big picture, keeping remarks limited to a
few simple ideas and a story or two.
Keeping it simple is the focus of our “Think on
your feet (and seat)” Workshop, which is being
held next on September 10. In this on-camera
program, participants role-play “off the cuff”
speaking situations on-camera and get feedback
from a coach. We focus on three major areas:
Organizing thoughts on the fly.
We teach a simple formula that can help you
focus your thoughts quickly so that you sound
confident, regardless of having no time to
prepare.
Answering questions in a way that sells your
ideas. We focus on how to keep your answers “out of the weeds”
and focused on the questioner’s true needs.
Communicating with
confident style:
How you look and sound matters a lot. We help
you communicate with the kind of style that
sells ideas.
So if you’re interested in communicating
effectively “off the cuff,” give us a call. We
can help you get safely across any “bridge.”
At Speechworks we help our clients learn how to
