To learn how to make complicated stuff easy to
understand, no one is a better teacher than Bill Nye the
Science Guy. For many years, Nye produced a popular national
television program on public television in which he explained
the complexities of science to children.
And what was his secret? Focus on just a few key points.
“The key to explaining things on my show,” Nye told
Speechworks, “has
been to distill the ideas to get to the fundamental notions
and to exclude the other interesting but not-so-focused
information . . . On the Dinosaur show we make
two points.
These are called “Learning Objectives” in the education
industry. A learning objective is something you can test
the viewer, reader, listener, or student on.”
So on the dinosaur show, the two points were:
·
We know
that dinosaurs once lived because we find their fossil
bones.
·
Dinosaurs and humans did not live at the same time.
In other
words, if you want to make complex things simple, take the
lead from Bill Nye the Science Guy. Pick two or three
“learning objectives” and make sure that your listeners get
those points.
