Negative Moods Might Make You a Better Speaker, Study Says.

It’s been one of those weeks. You’re feeling low. You’re burned out. You’re ready to give up and become a professional fisherman.  And you’re certainly not looking forward to giving that presentation tomorrow to the board of directors.

At least you can take heart in knowing that you may be about to give the best presentation of your life.

That’s one surprising implication from a new study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology.

Try "Show and Tell"  to  Really Make the Audience Understand.  It's Fun!

If you want to really get your audience to remember a point, try “show and tell”. If done right, demonstrations can make an unforgettable impression on an audience.

No one in the Washington D.C. hearing room will ever forget Nobel Prize Winning Physicist Richard Feynman immersing some rubber "O-Ring" material in a cup of ice water to demonstrate the cause of the explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger.

It turned out that the insulation around the infamous shuttle O-Rings, which had properties similar to Styrofoam, became dangerously inelastic at 32 degrees, the temperature on the day of the Challenger launch.

Fear of Computer Crashes Surpasses Fear of Public Speaking, Geek Poll Says.

Fear of losing personal and professional data in a massive computer failure has surpassed fear of public speaking as the nation’s top dread.

At least that’s according to a survey done by Geek Squad, a company that helps prevent computer failure.

Speechworks is certainly pleased that public speaking fear could be on the run.  But where public speaking ranks as a fear depends on the survey. Google.com recently offered up three surveys putting fear of public speaking first, second and sixth among the most common phobias of North Americans.

Want to Simplify Complex Topics?  Listen to Bill Nye the Science Guy.

To learn how to make complicated stuff easy to understand, no one is a better teacher than Bill Nye the Science Guy. For many years, Nye produced a popular national television program on public television in which he explained the complexities of science to children.

And what was his secret?  Focus on just a few key points.

When Henry Ford introduced the Model T, the joke was that you could have your car any color you wanted “Just so long as you want black.”   Unfortunately, most public speaking training is the same.

Most public speaking training takes place in workshops.  But Speechworks is changing that model with Communication Situation Coaching.
