What Can We Learn from Great Eulogies?     Use Stories to Grab an Audience.

You’d have to have a very dark heart not to get a little misty-eyed reading “Farewell, Godspeed: The Greatest Eulogies of Our Time.” And you’d have to be blind not to notice what makes these eulogies so strong and this book so fascinating.

It’s the wonderful stories.  These eulogies are a wonderful lesson to all of us of the power of stories to grip an audience.

The book compiles eulogies from a range of famous people: from Martin Luther King, Jr. to Lucille Ball.

For a Presentation to Persuade,  Less is More. Decision-Makers Appreciate Frugality.

You’re speaking to the board of directors, trying to win approval for a large capital improvement. Do you give them a detailed analysis of the reasons to approve the project?  Or do you hit them with a few key messages supporting your position?

You have a better chance of winning the approval if you go with a few key messages.  Too much information actually makes decisions more difficult, according to “Blink”, the bestseller that focuses on how people make judgments.

A Public Speaking Tip from Muhammad Ali:    If You're Not the Greatest, Act it.

“To be a great champion you must believe you are the best.  If you’re not, pretend you are.”

Those are the profound words of Boxing Legend Muhammad Ali.  And while he probably wasn’t discussing public speaking, he could have been.

At Speechworks, we have found that speakers can “fake it until you make it.”  That means behaving like a great speaker behaves. Keep your presentation focused on a few key points, speak with passion, and practice your speech.  That’s what we help our clients do in our programs.

When Is a TelePrompter Permissible?      When You're President of the United States.

There’s a simple two-pronged test to determine whether it is okay for you to use a TelePrompter.

  • First, you must have dozens of speeches to deliver every week with no time to practice.
  • Second, you must be in a position where if you misspeak, Sudan might invade Kenya.

To our mind, the only person who fits that description is the Leader of the Free World. Everyone else should avoid the TelePrompTer.  That’s because, unless you’re extremely experienced, it will make you sound stiff and you will almost certainly fail to connect with your audience.

Want to Nail Your Next Big Presentation?    Let Our Coaches Help You Be a Star!

When Henry Ford introduced the Model T, the joke was that you could have your car any color you wanted “Just so long as you want black.”   Unfortunately, most public speaking training is the same.

Most public speaking training takes place in workshops.  But Speechworks is changing that model with Communication Situation Coaching.
