“Present
unto others as you would have others present unto you.”
That’s the
Speaker’s Golden Rule. And our work world would certainly be
a better place if we all followed it.
What would
you prefer? A one-hour presentation? Or a 20-minute
presentation with lots of time for Q&A?
What would
you rather sit through? A 60-slide PowerPoint presentation
with 20 different points? Or a 10-slide presentation with
three crisp points that put the issue into clear perspective?
What would
you rather listen to? A presentation with reams of data? Or
a presentation that focuses on the most important data and
tells the story behind that data illustrating its true
business impact?
Who would
you rather watch? A presenter who speaks with the dull
monotone of someone who is bored with her material? Or a
speaker who speaks with energy and seems passionate about her
ideas?
Next time
you sit down to prepare your presentation, think about the
audience. Sit in their seat. And consider what they want.
