Women managers who
want to advance their careers should be careful not to dress too
sexy at the office,
according to a recently published study.
Researchers at
Lawrence University in Appleton Wisconsin asked men and women to
watch a video of a woman identified as a “manager” as she discussed
her background and hobbies.
When the woman wore
“non-sexy” business attire, she was judged by the viewers as being
smarter, with a higher college GPA and from a more prestigious
college than when she wore “sexy” clothing.
“Non-sexy” clothing
included flat shoes, slacks and a turtleneck. “Sexy” clothing
included high heels, a tight skirt, and a low-cut blouse.
It should be noted
that when the same woman was identified as a “receptionist”, her
clothing did not impact how she was perceived by the viewers.
How you look
matters a lot. So be careful what you wear. It could impact your
career.
