Want to stamp out
jargon at your office? Try playing the
Speechworks version of Buzzword BINGO. All you need is a
Speechworks Buzzword Bingo card and a presenter with a sense of
humor.
Buzzword BINGO is
played like regular BINGO except that instead of filling up your
card with letters and numbers like B-22 or G-15, you listen for the
Buzzwords listed on the Speechworks Buzzword BINGO cards.
Words on the cards
include common business jargon like “win-win”, synergize”,
“paradigm,” “incentivize”, and “take it to the next level.”
While we wish we
had invented it, Buzzword Bingo has actually been around since the
early 1990s. It really took off when the comic strip
Dilbert mentioned Buzzword Bingo in a strip. Now you can go to
several websites and get
Buzzword Bingo cards.
If you want use our
cards, here’s what to do:
-
Print out copies
of the Speechworks Buzzword BINGO cards.
cards.
-
Distribute the
cards to meeting attendees.
-
While listening
to the presentation, players put an “X” through every Buzzword
they hear that is on their card.
-
The first
participant to get five words in a row in any direction, must
raise their hand and say “Buzzword BINGO!”
-
They must then
review the Buzzwords and discuss plain English ways of saying the
same things.
What does the
winner receive? How about the smug feeling that you’re helping your
colleagues communicate more effectively?
At Speechworks we
help our clients learn how to communicate in a way that connects and
persuades. If you’re interested in becoming a great communicator
