Speaking Tips from the UPS Whiteboard Guy. |
|
 |
|
Joey Asher
President's
Perspective |
My
new hero is the UPS Whiteboard Guy.
And I’m
not the only one. Those cool
UPS whiteboard television advertisements
have gotten
a lot of notice. In a sure sign of the spots’ impact,
You Tube has several funny (and sometimes raunchy)
spoofs of the ads. The on-line magazine Slate did an
interesting
analysis of the ads.
But
I love the ads because in each spot, UPS Whiteboard Guy
conducts 30-second master classes in how to deliver
business presentations. The spots illustrate how to tell
a story, how to make a complex point, how to speak in a
conversational style, and, of course, how to use visuals
to support a presentation.

If You Can't Make More Money in Less Time, You Can Deliver Better
Speeches with Less Effort. |
|
One of the hot
business books these days is
“The Four-Hour Work Week: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the
New Rich.” The book is all about how to make
more money with less effort.
But at
Speechworks, we feel that the author left out a key idea: making
better speeches with less effort.
The author
Timothy Ferriss purports to detail how you can make far more money
with far less work. He claims to have gone from making
$40,000 a year working eighty hours a week, to making $40,000 a
month while working only four hours a week.

Cool Phrase of the Month: "Free Timer." |
|
A “free-timer” is
someone who is unemployed. It’s the next step down from a
“part-timer.”
“Poor Jimmy. He
worked at that high tech firm for five years before the place went
bankrupt and he lost his job. Now Jimmy is a free-timer.”
If you want to
suggest a "cool phrase of the month", send it to

Flip-Charts to Add Spontaneity to Speeches. |
|
One way to add
impact to your next presentation is to dump PowerPoint and use a
Flip-Chart.
More than anything
else, Flip-Charts allow for spontaneity as you draw
pictures that illustrate ideas. They also require that
you simplify your ideas, which is always a good thing.

Public Speaking Idea from Elvis Presley. |
|
“Ambition is a
dream with a V8 engine.”
Those are the words
of Elvis Presley.
And while The King
certainly wasn’t talking about public speaking, we think public
speaking can be part of the "V8 engine" that drives your ambition.
One of the keys to
success in business and achieving ambitions is being able to sell
ideas.
Selling ideas is what we teach at Speechworks.
