If you
want to vote for a “filler-word” All-Star, you can check
out
www.ummlike.com,
a fun website by InteviewStream, which provides video
interview technology to hundreds of universities, MBA
Programs, job boards, and employers.
The
website allows you vote for the celebrity that you feel
is most afflicted with filler-words. The site also
provides helpful tips on how to eliminate filler-words
and come across as more confident in meetings.
First, Notice the Filler-Words
At
Speechworks, we tell our clients that there are two keys
to eliminating filler-words.
First,
you have to be aware that you’re saying the filler-words. Most people who pepper their speech with “you
know” and “like” don’t even hear themselves saying the
words. Just making yourself hear the words will help
you eliminate the words. We recommend putting a rubber
band around your wrist as a constant reminder to hear
your filler-words.
Learn
How to Pause instead of saying "Like"
Once
you begin hearing your filler-words words, cultivate
your ability to pause. As soon as you feel you’re about
to say “you know”, just close your lips and pause. No
only will you eliminate the filler-word, you’ll sound
more confident.
Apply
this simple approach for a month and you’ll reduce your
dependence on filler-words.
At
