Say
that you’re invited to speak at a conference in
Bangalore, India. But you also need to be present at a meeting
that morning in Atlanta. Normally, you would have to
make a decision on which of the two events to attend.
But
that may be changing thanks to a new Star Trek-style
technology that allows you to be “beamed” into the
Bangalore conference to deliver your speech. The
technology makes it appear that you’re actually in the
Bangalore auditorium on stage delivering your speech, even though
you would still be in Atlanta.
This
cool new technology is being offered by Cisco as part of their
high-definition
“TelePresence”
offering.

Cisco TelePresence is a new technology that combines
rich audio, high-definition video, and interactive
elements to deliver a unique in-person experience—over
the network. The On-Stage TelePresence pairs
Cisco’s system with
a very thin screen that is placed on the stage in the
auditorium where the speech is to be delivered. The
screen, developed as part of the Musion Eyeliner System,
is invisible to the audience and allows the audience to
see the image of the speaker in 3-D. The effect is a
Star Trek-like illusion of the speaker standing live in
front of the audience.
The
On-Stage TelePresence is a high-tech variation on a
stage-trick that magicians have used for years. Dating
back to the 1800s, magicians have used mirrors on stage
to make images appear and disappear.
